Gregg Emery was selected as an Artist-In-Residence on Governors Island from July 1st - November 1st 2020 and for this summer of 2021.

For 2020 he was joined by his good friend and fellow artist, David Powell.  They worked on a series of paintings, Powell with spray paint, text and a sense of humor, Emery with minimal, gestural abstractions in acrylic paint, both separately and together.  The collaboration pieces began with inspiration directly from the studio space on the island, the layers of various hues of white cracking from every surface but turned into a play in contrasts....layers of blacks and whites worked in two different styles, voices and languages all competing together through the surface but trying to find common ground.  Both of them are inherently affected and responding to the experiences of the city in the past 6 months but echoes of memory and other spaces and moments come through as well.
