慕田峪 Mutianyu Brickyard Solo Exhibit

In the summer of 2016, Emery was invited to Beijing for an artist residency.  Work produced over that time, in a studio located walking distance from the Great Wall, was then displayed for a solo exhibition which was open to the public.  Both the residency and the exhibition were sponsored by the Brickyard Retreat at Mutianyu.

The show featured works (10 acrylic paintings of varying sizes), all created in China, that were inspired by the colors from the environment, local foods and even the shifting sky colors.  Sketches and watercolors based on people in the village as well as people and places seen and drawn while on trips to the center of Beijing were also strung up like clothes seen on a clothesline in the village.

Notably, by the time Emery returned to New York, his first solo show in Asia was completely sold out.  The works can be seen in private and public collections throughout China, Korea and a few that made their way back to the United States.

Chashama Gregg Emery.jpg

Chashama

Chashama transforms dormant real estate for artists to create and present their work, and offers free art classes in underserved communities.

Chashama was founded in 1995 by Anita Durst to celebrate the legacy of theatre visionary Reza Abdoh. Chashama’s initial focus was on the production and presentation of new theatre. Recognizing that a lack of affordable space was the biggest threat to sustaining a diverse cultural environment in New York City, they began to work toward securing studio and presentation space in Midtown Manhattan for struggling artists by partnering with Property Owners that provide unused space to Chashama.
